NEW DELHI— In a move that shattered traditional military glass ceilings and redefined India’s higher defense management, General Anil Chauhan’s transition from a retired three-star officer to the nation’s top military commander stands as a landmark chapter in modern Indian history. His journey to the pinnacle of the armed forces began on June 13, 1981, when he was commissioned into the 6th Battalion of the 11th Gorkha Rifles from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Over a distinguished forty-year career, he excelled in a vast array of strategic roles, including an instructional tenure at HQ IMTRAT in Bhutan, serving as a United Nations Military Observer in Angola, and serving as the Director General of Discipline, Ceremonial & Welfare at Army Headquarters.

As his rank ascended, so did the gravity of his operational responsibilities. As a Major General, he commanded the Baramulla-based 19th Infantry Division, and upon his promotion to Lieutenant General, he took charge of the Dimapur-based III Corps. However, it was his appointment as Director General Military Operations in January 2018 that thrust him into the center of national security. In this role, he masterminded two of India’s most significant recent military operations: the 2019 Balakot airstrike against Pakistan and Operation Sunrise, a joint counter-insurgency offensive with Myanmar. He later assumed command of the critical Eastern Command in September 2019, succeeding Lieutenant General Manoj Mukund Naravane, before hanging up his uniform in superannuation on May 31, 2021. Yet, his retirement was short-lived, as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval quickly brought his unparalleled expertise into the National Security Council Secretariat as a military advisor.

While General Chauhan was advising on national security from the sidelines, a sudden leadership vacuum gripped the nation. On December 8, 2021, India's inaugural Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, tragically died in a Mil Mi-17 helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Because the newly created apex post lacked a defined order of succession, the position fell vacant for nine months. While General Naravane stepped in as an interim head of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, his subsequent retirement in April 2022 left the permanent succession open. In response, the Ministry of Defence issued a groundbreaking gazette notification in June 2022, amending qualifications to allow any serving or retired three-star officer under the age of 62 to be eligible for the post.

This historic policy shift placed General Chauhan, who had retired at age 60, at the forefront of a pool of fourteen eligible candidates. On September 28, 2022, the government officially announced his appointment, and two days later, he made history by becoming the first three-star retiree to be recalled to active duty to assume the four-star post of Chief of Defence Staff.

Throughout his tenure, General Chauhan has brought a fiercely analytical and pragmatic approach to India's defense challenges. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, he robustly dismissed Pakistani claims of downing six Indian aircraft during Operation Sindoor as completely false. Demonstrating his focus on operational growth over rhetoric, he emphasized that the true measure of military capability is not avoiding losses, but understanding why they occurred and rapidly rectifying tactical shortcomings—a philosophy that enabled India to resume effective airstrikes within 48 hours of the engagement. Recognizing his steady hand and visionary leadership, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet extended his service tenure as the CDS and ex-officio Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, ensuring that his profound impact on India’s defense architecture will continue to guide the nation.
