New Delhi, May 29, 2026: Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, PVSM, AVSM, NM assumed charge as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) today. Prior to taking over the esteemed office, the Flag Officer paid solemn homage to the nation's bravehearts by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems. Over his distinguished and illustrious career spanning more than 37 years, he has commanded five frontline Indian Naval ships, including the nation's flagship aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya.

The Flag Officer has held several critical operational, staff, and training appointments throughout his tenure. Notable among these are Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects, Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet (FOWF), Commandant of the National Defence Academy (NDA), and Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command.

Prior to his appointment as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN). During his tenure at the strategic unified command, he played a pivotal role in significantly enhancing operational coordination, integration, and jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
