V.D Satheesan (Chief Minister, Keralam)
The Keralam government is providing a protective shield for hundreds of gig workers who toil without rest. Keralam has become the first state in South India to set up designated resting spaces for gig workers. By embracing workers in the gig sector, Keralam is also setting the foundation for an international-standard work culture. Compared to previous times, the gig sector is recording massive growth in the number of workers. A significant presence of gig workers can now be seen not only in urban areas but in rural regions as well.
Keralam government initiative provides gig partners with safe spaces to rest and recharge during their demanding work hours. Building on prior social welfare programs, such as free public bus travel for women on KSRTC buses, the state government is extending social security schemes to ride-hailing drivers, food delivery executives, and e-commerce logistics personnel. This project is being implemented as part of the state government’s 100-day action plan.
In its first phase, the project is being rolled out across three major urban hubs: Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode. Operating daily in two shifts from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, these facilities offer excellent amenities that go far beyond a simple resting stop.
Each hub comes fully equipped with comfortable seating, clean restrooms, purified drinking water, designated dining areas, first-aid kits, high-speed Wi-Fi, and mobile charging stations.
Reducing Fatigue and Enhancing Road Safety
Beyond basic convenience, these centers target critical operational issues affecting the gig economy. By providing spaces that offer protection from extreme weather during long shifts on the road, the initiative aims to significantly reduce occupational fatigue and physical stress. Giving time-pressured drivers structured break points is expected to alleviate mental stress and directly contribute to reducing road accidents.
Led by Minister Smt. Bindu Krishna through the Labour Department, this reform shows the Keralam government extending support to a sector that previously lacked workplace assistance. Through this initiative, a remarkably positive message is being sent across Keralam's working environment.
